Showcasing Excellence in Teaching Through Mentorship

For Jaime Tartar, Ph.D., teaching is about more than just giving lectures in the classroom—it’s about a strong commitment to student learning and success. As a faculty adviser and a mentor, Tartar works closely with her students, helping them develop new ideas, examine their goals, and pursue their interests with challenging research. Because of her dedication, Tartar, an assistant professor in the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, received the college's prestigious Full-Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award for 2009-2010. As the award recipient, Tartar will represent faculty members and welcome students to the start of the new academic year at the annual convocation program on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, in the Miniaci Performing Arts Center at NSU.

Making the Goal: Graduate Shines in Scholastics, Soccer

Hayley Oligane knows she might not be graduating from Nova Southeastern University or going to medical school if not for the encouragement of the orthopedic surgeon who repaired her knee after a soccer injury sent her to the sidelines.

“He told me I could recover. He instilled hope in me that I had a college career ahead of me,” said Hayley, who was a high-school senior when she injured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of four ligaments connecting the bones of the knee joint. “I worked hard, and I came back four months after the surgery.”

About four months later, Hayley was recruited by Mike Goodrich, head coach of the NSU women’s soccer team.

Students Inducted into Marine Science Honor Society

A leader in undergraduate marine biology programs, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences at Nova Southeastern University has launched the country’s second chapter of Rho Rho Rho, the marine sciences national honor society.

The honor society’s Beta chapter was established in September 2008 to recognize student excellence and promote awareness of the college’s undergraduate marine biology program. The presence of such an organization offers prospective students another incentive to choose NSU if they wish to pursue a major or minor in marine biology. The chapter’s activities and networking opportunities create a more dynamic experience for the program’s current students.

The Promethean Theatre to Present Dumb Show at NSU May 15–31

The Promethean Theatre (TPT), Nova Southeastern University’s professional theater company in residence, will present the southeastern premiere of Dumb Show, May 15–31, 2009, in the Mailman-Hollywood Building Auditorium. Show times are Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 3:00 p.m.

A play by Joe Penhall and directed by Margaret M. Ledford, Dumb Show is a searing account of tabloid journalism, the value of fame, and the overstepping of personal boundaries in the world of celebrity worship and gossip mongers. The cast features Carbonell Award-winning actor Gregg Weiner, David Sirois, and Deborah L. Sherman, TPT’s co-founder and producing artistic director.

London’s Daily Telegraph says Penhall’s Dumb Show “offers a mesmerizing, utterly persuasive account of a classic tabloid sting … a furious, black-comic satire on the bankrupt values of our tabloid culture.”

Tickets for Dumb Show are $5 for NSU students. Prices for the general public are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for students with valid ID. Cash and checks are accepted at the door, but not credit cards. For tickets, call (786) 317-7580 or email boxoffice@theprometheantheatre.org. For more information about TPT, visit www.theprometheantheatre.org.

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences is proud to partner with The Promethean Theatre in bringing professional theater productions to NSU. TPT’s production of Two Sisters and a Piano, presented at NSU in 2008, has earned the 33rd annual Carbonell Award for “Best Ensemble.” The Carbonell Awards are South Florida’s oldest and most prestigious arts honors.
